If you are 55 or older, save money on your car insurance premiums and become a better driver! Minnesota law requires that insurance companies offer a 10% reduction on auto insurance for three years if you complete a state-approved defensive driving course taught by professional, certified instructors. This class requires a booklet to accompany the online presentation. This booklet is available for pickup when you register at the office or once you register online. Please pick up at the District Office, 1440 49th Ave. NE, Columbia Heights, MN 55421. Park in the Family Center Parking lot, come to door #2, and you will be able to pick up the booklet at the front window. *Please note: each card transaction will incur a processing fee of 3.29% of total amount plus $0.39. Checks, cash or ACH withdrawals will incur $0 fees. For checks or cash, payment can be brought to the CHPS District Office (door #2) on Mondays-Fridays from 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. when the district is open.

Students will receive a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The classroom portion consists of ten, three-hour classes and the behind-the-wheel portion is three, two-hour private lessons (scheduled through Safeway). Self-Paced, Online Driver’s Education Class – Columbia Heights Community Education Experience the flexibility of learning at your own pace with Safeway Driving School’s Self-Paced, Online Driver’s Education program, offered in partnership with Columbia Heights Community Education. Designed for today’s busy students, this state-approved course provides the same comprehensive 30-hour curriculum as traditional in-person classes but allows students to complete their coursework independently through an engaging, user-friendly online learning portal. Key Details Self-Paced Learning:Complete the 30-hour course on your own schedule, working up to 3 hours per day. The program can be finished in as little as 10 days or extended over the full 6-month enrollment period. Lessons must be completed sequentially to ensure a structured learning experience. Online Access:Classes are available online 24/7, Monday through Sunday, offering complete flexibility to fit into your schedule. Required Technology:Students will need an iPad, laptop, or similar device to access the course materials. Safeway Driving School will email login credentials and setup instructions to both the student and parent/guardian (if applicable).Please make sure both email addresses are on file and checked regularly. Package Information:Enrollment in the course includes the required behind-the-wheel lessons. Students have one year from the final date of their classroom session or their 15th birthday (whichever comes later) to complete their six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Course Features: Engaging curriculum with short videos, interactive quizzes and games, and instructor-led lectures. After-hours technical support available 24/7. Curriculum support via chat and phone, Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM. Extend enrollment for an additional 6 months for a $50 fee, if needed. Registration and Login:Once you enroll through Columbia Heights Community Education, you will receive a registration email with login instructions for the online portal. Be sure to use an email address you check regularly to avoid delays in accessing the course. Policies Transfer Policy:Students transferring from an in-person class to a self-paced class must start from Lesson 1. Students enrolled in the self-paced course may transfer to an in-person program at any time; student progress will transfer to the in-person program. Refund Policy:Fees are refundable or transferable only if the course has not been started. Once the “Start Course” button is clicked, no refund will be issued for the classroom portion of the fee.
